FUTURISTIC TENSILE DESIGN ON AFRICA'S SKELETON COAST
HOANIB'S TENSILE STRUCTURE CAMP
SITE LOCATION: Hoanib Valley, Namibia
Scenically nestling in the valley where the two tributaries of the Hoanib River meet, the Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp rests in a stark yet beautiful landscape in Namibia’s ancient Namib Desert’s famed Kaokoveld - an otherworldly landscape hewn over the ages into immense dunes and rocky mountains.
SCOPE OF WORK:
Textile Architecture & Engineering
Tenthouse Structures design-engineered, supplied and installed the striking roof membrane structures for the eight accommodation units and main area.
Searing daytime temperatures of 50°C dropping to a frosty 8°C at night, frequent sandstorms and the threat of rainy-season flash floods were all factored into our design.
The tensile architecture solution was a lightweight bespoke design incorporating high performance, custom-engineered materials to ensure the signature membranes provide luxurious refuge from the elements, withstand the desert conditions and compliment the contemporary aesthetic. The neutral colour palette chosen is in keeping with the wilderness surrounds.
